5 Reasons Dating A Nerdy Guy Will Make You Unbelievably Happy

OK, girls. So your fantasy man probably isn't sporting Google Glasses or a keychain of bootable USBs when you picture him.

And I get it. Those Hollywood movies promised you a handsome hunk on a horse, not a dork.

But here's the thing: Those dorky boys are often way better boyfriends than any hunk you'll meet.

If you're frustrated with the men you've been dating, and you're wondering where all the good guys are, you may be passing over your best options by dismissing the nerdy guys.

Geeky guys make the best, most devoted boyfriends. And if you haven't dated one, consider these five benefits of having a geeky boyfriend:

1. He can solve your hardware problems.

You know that Nintendo Wii you can't connect to the WiFi? Your geeky boyfriend will set that up for you. Has your computer's keyboard inexplicably been spitting out French? He can fix that, too.

He makes a wonderful handyman who will save you time, money and effort.

When my laptop experienced a hard drive failure, I thought I might need a whole new laptop, but my boyfriend pulled out a spare hard drive and installed it in less than an hour. It was like magic.

2. He'll have passions to share with you.

One thing you won't run out of with a geek is things to talk about.

Although a typical handsome hunk may look pretty, he won't give you anywhere near the kind of conversational stimulation as a geeky boyfriend who wants to tell you about some code he's working on in a program to make a text-based adventure game.

Let him tell you all about his D&D group and his computer setup. You'll learn a lot, and the conversation will definitely keep flowing all night long.

3. He won't make dating a game.

One thing your geeky boyfriend absolutely will not do is play weird dating games with you.

For example, he won't ignore your calls to make you seem desperate, send cryptic texts to upset you or tell his friends all about how much you nag him. (In fact, he may be the only one in his friend group with a girlfriend, so he'll probably be bragging about you.)

Boys who are used to girls falling all over them all the time will sometimes fail to appreciate your efforts and care, or they'll find them stifling instead of loving.

A geeky boyfriend will value the attention you show him and know he's got a good thing going on.

4. He's got fun gadgets to play with.

One thing geeks are known for is their collection of gadgets and gizmos. Your geeky boyfriend has also probably spent hours perusing ThinkGeek.

If you poke around his place, you'll find fun stuff like a Bluetooth-operated replica of the communicators from Star Trek, a waffle maker that makes Death Star-shaped waffles or a Bluetooth typewriter you can connect to your iPad.

They're a blast to play with, and he may even gift you some fun gadgets of your own on your birthday or around Christmas.

5. He won't be someone he's not.

Rather than worrying about impressing others or doing what's expected, he's going to follow his own set of expectations and not worry about what people think of him.

That means less blowing you off to avoid looking whipped, less bravado and performative masculinity and more time cuddling and watching Netflix on his account together (like I'm doing right now).

Don't let preconceptions of what your boyfriend should be like scare you away from a fun, geeky boyfriend. Broaden your horizons and see what you've been missing out on.
