5 Cheesy Pieces Of Breakup Advice That Are Actually True

by Alison Segel

Some of the best breakup advice I've received has been from my grandma and my mom. My grandma told me that every relationship is either for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Not every romance is meant to last forever, but every person comes into your life for a purposes. And as long as you learn something from an experience, it will always be valuable — even if it ends in heartbreak.

On the other hand, my mom has always told me that there are always more fish in the sea, and who needs fish anyway?

Sometimes, there are cheesy pieces of breakup advice that actually work, no matter how silly it sounds. They just make you feel better when your heart and guts feel like they've been put through a blender. So here are some of those cheesy pieces of breakup advice to help you through your next heartbreak (XOXO, your mom).

1. "They Call It A Breakup Because It's Broken"

Your relationship didn't end because it was perfect and amazing. It ended because it was flawed, and you were unhappy.

Sometimes, we glorify, fantasize about, and romanticize the past once it becomes, well, the past. We only think about the good times and forget about how our ex used to make us cry, how they were super condescending, or how they were always on their phone in the bedroom at night, when they should've been cuddling and showing us affection.

It's called a breakup because it is broken. Don't spend your time and energy trying to put a shattered relationship back together.

2. "You Deserve Better"

You never want to force anyone to like you, and if someone doesn't want to be with you, then you really do deserve better. Why would you want to be in a relationship where you're unhappy? That seems totally masochistic and very not fun.

You deserve love, respect, kindness, and honesty — but only if it's mutual, and you're giving it to someone, too. Remember, you can only get what you give out.

3. "You Can Only Love Others If You Love Yourself"

You know whenever you're on an airplane and they're reading the safety announcements, and the fight attendant says you have to put on your own oxygen mask before you can help to put on someone else's? Well, a relationship is a crashing airplane, and self-love is the oxygen mask.

In order to have a healthy love life, you have to have a healthy relationship with yourself first. As Ru Paul says, "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?"

4. "Time Heals"

Everything gets better with time, whether it's split ends, a broken leg, or a broken heart. There's even that mathematical theory, though, that says it takes half the length of a relationship to get over the relationship itself.

Regardless, don't worry. You really won't be grieving your ex forever. When it comes to breakups, time is actually on your side.

5. "Living Well Is The Best Revenge"

Living well is absolutely the best revenge in a breakup. But what does living well entail? Well, in my opinion, it's not caring about revenge at all, but instead, focusing on yourself and your happiness.

If you've just been dumped, don't think about your dude at all. Plunge into your career. Take some trips with your friends. Start working out if that makes you feel good. Wash that man right out of your hair. Because living well means living for you.

If you're going through a breakup, remember some of the cheesy advice you've heard that's made you feel better before.

And of course, there are plenty of other fish in the sea. Plus, who needs fish anyway?
