8 Funny Couples Costume Ideas So You And Your Partner Win Every Halloween Costume Competition

I have somehow always been single on Halloween, but it's a personal dream of mine to have a boyfriend on the holiday, so I can force him to do one of those funny couples costume ideas, like Mario and Luigi or I'm the front half of the horse and he's the back. To me, there is nothing cornier than a joint Halloween costume, and I think we can all use a little bit more corny in our lives. I look at the couples who dress like different Wes Anderson characters every year and think, I want that.

There's just something about October, you know? It's a magical time of year. The air is crisp. It even smells different. There is candy wherever you go. Pumpkin Spice Lattes become primarily the only and most annoying thing ordered at Starbucks. And despite being a full-fledged adult, Halloween is still my favorite holiday. I love Halloween Superstores; sometimes, I just go there to wander because I think they're therapeutic. I go online shopping for spooky supplies even if I have no real intention of buying anything, and I plan out couples costumes ideas even when I'm not even in a couple.

What I'm saying is, I'm the type of person who secretly watches The Nightmare Before Christmas a lot and, as a result, spends a lot of time thinking about what I should be for Halloween. I even think of costumes for me and my imaginary boyfriend — who, I'm hoping, will reveal himself by Oct. 31, so we can dress up together.

So here are eight funny couples costume ideas so you and your partner win every Halloween competition this year. Believe me, you got this in the bag.

1. The Distracted Boyfriend Meme

This is obviously a three-person costume — great for polyamorous couples or if you have a friend who needs to third wheel. (We all have that friend, and that friend is usually me.) Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you've definitely seen this meme floating around the internet. Typically referred to as the "distracted boyfriend" meme, a man is walking with his girlfriend, but is distracted by another woman passing by.

This costume is cheap to create because, most likely, you already have pretty similar outfits in your closet. For girl #1, all you need are jeans and a blue tank top. For girl #2, it's just as simple: jeans and a red tank top. For the distracted dude, you need black pants and a flannel t-shirt. Then, all you have to do is fill out the "meme" part by taping white pieces of paper to your chest! Write something funny, topical, or personally applicable to you. This is a costume contest winner for sure.

2. The Eggplant And The Peach Emoji

Grindr

There is nothing more romantic than dressing up for Halloween like the first time you and your significant other ever sexted. If you're looking for a costume that's #relatable, then this is probably the one for you. The eggplant costume is available on Amazon for about $20, and the peach is available for $28. In addition to the costumes, you might even want to carry around a sign that just says, "U up?"

Hey, maybe don't even take your costumes off at the end of the night when you're ready to do the deed. It could be useful for some emoji-themed role play. It's Halloween! Get weird!

3. The Eclipse

Remember when we all freaked out about the 2017 solar eclipse for a day? I went to, like, 20 different 7-Elevens trying to score eclipse glasses last minute. I couldn't find any, and I refused to look through an old cereal box, so I just watched the solar event on television instead.

So in honor of the day where we all finally joined together in unison for something good, why not dress up as the eclipse for Halloween? You can be the sun, and your partner can be the moon, or vice-versa, depending on how you are personality-wise. Then, just spend the night eclipsing one another!

To dress up as the eclipse, one partner dresses up as the moon, and another dresses up as the sun. There are a few ways to go about this. On Amazon, you can buy this moon mask for $17 and sun costume for $32. Or you can go the DIY route, which is typically cheapest and easiest. For the moon, you'll need a black leotard and a piece of black cardboard cut in a circle for the head piece. The sun requires a yellow leotard and a yellow headpiece instead. And there ya go — a DIY eclipse.

Maybe even bring some homemade eclipse glasses, and hand them out at any events you go to. Everyone loves a party favor.

4. Michael Phelps And The Shark

I mean, who doesn't love Shark Week? Remember when Michael Phelps raced that shark? He lost. What did he think was going to happen when he raced a shark? Oh, to have the confidence of a man who thinks that he can swim faster than a shark. But anyway!

A good Halloween costume is you dressing up as a shark, and your partner dressing up as Michael Phelps. You can even race on foot down the street and have the party take bets on who they think will win. To be Michael Phelps, all you need is a hoodie and a bad attitude. And then, you can buy a shark costume on Amazon for $60.

But be careful!!!! Safety is the number one priority — THEN shark racing.

5. Rihanna And A Flask

Hello, Rihanna, you are perfect, never change. To honor Rihanna for being the best person to ever grace this planet, why not dress up as her for Halloween? But if it's a couples costume you're looking for, then definitely dress up as her and her significant other, that flask.

You can get a rum bottle costume on Amazon for a mere $23, but if you want to be really authentic, you can draw a flask on cardboard, cut it out, and wear it, or you can just stick a bunch of regular flasks on you. And to be Rihanna, pick your favorite look (you can also buy Rihanna masks online) and copy that outfit — but don't forget to draw her tattoos on your body as well.

6. Tetris Pieces

This is an incredibly easy and cheap costume to make — it only requires boxes, tape, and colored paper. Form you and your costume partner into compatible shapes, and spend the night sticking together. But if you find your partner fitting with someone else, then game over. You can also buy the costume on Amazon, but it costs $135, so I'm a big fan of just making your own.

7. Daenerys Targaryen And Jon Snow

Helen Sloan/HBO

I don't watch Game of Thrones, but from what I gather, these two are technically related and have sex, and he was dead for a bit, so that seems like it would be a funny costume idea to me! Lots to work with here. A lot of moving parts. Am I getting this show right? It's about siblings who are back from the dead and who hook up on top of dragons, and then also... war? I don't know. Anyway, you can find Game of Thrones costumes here.

8. Bob Ross And A Painting

I found a picture on Pinterest of a person dressed like Bob Ross, and a woman dressed like one of his paintings (her head was sticking through a canvas), and now, I absolutely need to be this for Halloween. Who doesn't love Bob Ross? He is the most soothing person on this planet.

For Bob Ross, all you need is a curly afro, a Canadian tuxedo, and a paint palette. The second part of the couples costume requires a bit more effort. Get a canvas, and paint it like one of our friend Bob's paintings. Then, cut a head-sized hole in the middle, and use face paint to paint your own face similarly to the canvas. When you stick your head through the hole — voilà — you are now part of the painting. Wear a leotard for full artistic effect.

Plus, Bob Ross is known for such quotes as “There's nothing wrong with having a tree as a friend,” and “We don't make mistakes. We just have happy accidents.” I love Bob Ross. When it comes to him, I have nothing but respect for MY president! A+ Halloween costume.

Do you have any more funny costume ideas? Let me know in the comments. I might use one of them — if I can get someone to date me by then.
