It's Over! The 10 Things To Look Forward To When Finally Breaking Up
As depressing as breakups can be, there is always a bright side. Just like any devastating situation, you can either see it as the glass half full or empty. Stop wallowing in self-pity and Ben & Jerry's and look at all the great aspects a breakup can offer.
You don't have to concern yourself with the emotions and feelings of someone else, you get to be selfish again! You get to start doing things for your own personal benefit and gain. Your free time is completely and utterly devoted to you and whatever you choose to do at that given moment.
Being in a relationship means you were devoting a large part of your time to someone else. Now that you have all this free time on your hands, it is time to focus on yourself. Peace out obligations, like events you had absolutely no interest in attending, but had to because of your counterpart. Your weekends are for you and your friends that you probably neglected just a little over the course of your relationship
All right people, it's time to put away the Kleenex and your Dashboard Confessional playlist and realize all the great things your breakup has to offer.
1. You never have to listen to them complain again
FINALLY, there's that off switch you were always looking for when your partner would nag the sh*t out of you with their incessant whining. Of course, part of being in a relationship is the ability to have someone to vent to, but this person is your personal therapist. Who wants to spend their free time with someone who can't stop complaining?
2. You never have to deal with their batsh*t crazy family
Ugh, the parentals. Chances are you don't really connect with your significant other's family and it was all a façade. You can't tell your partner outright that you can't stand their mother or father (been there, done that), it doesn't go over too well. Lucky for you, you never have to sit through an awkward meal with them again! Do you order that second drink? Do you answer honestly when they ask about your crazy family? That sounds exhausting just thinking about it.
3. You can date whomever you want and however many people you want
After being tied down to one person for an extended period of time, it's a breath of fresh air when you can put yourself back in the game. Think about all of the opportunities you missed out on because you were in a relationship — you never have to miss out again!
4. You regain your freedom
No longer do you have to check your phone every five f*cking minutes while out at the bar with your friends to make sure your boyfriend or girlfriend isn't having a meltdown that you're out without them. Checking in and verifying plans is a notion of the past and it's about damn time. Oh, you're not a fan of the group I'm going out with? Guess what?! Never again do you have to have that absurd conversation. Amen!
5. You can eat whatever the F you want
Okay, well maybe to an extent, but you don't have to feel self-conscious about your body and adjust your eating habits based on your partner's preferences. Dessert? Bring on the cheesecake since the only person you're going to be in bed with that night is Netflix. I'll have “10 Things I Hate About You” with a side of popcorn please, and yes, I would like butter with that.
6. You can hang out with your friends of the opposite sex again
The most annoying thing a partner can do is give you a hard time when you want to hang out with your friends of the opposite sex. Newsflash: PEOPLE CAN BE JUST FRIENDS. It is possible for guys and girls to be friends without anything sexual going on between them. Sometimes you just need a break from your own gender. It's awesome to hear things from the opposite sex's perspective since they have a mindset that is typically different from your own. Plus they give the best dating advice.
7. You are in charge of your own happiness
Now is the time to do things that only you want to do. No longer are your feelings or plans contingent upon someone else's. If you're not into an activity, you don't have to engage in it. You have to take responsibility for your life since you no longer have a scapegoat to push the blame to. No one determines your happiness but you and this is the time to realize it.
8. You regain your focus
Everyone knows how hard it is to focus on anything when your relationship is in troubled waters. Getting work done isn't even an option because you're checking your phone every chance you get. Your mind is filled with anxiety and worry and, obviously, being in a good mood isn't even an option. When you're single, you can simply focus on yourself and whatever you need to get done. You don't have to preoccupy yourself with someone else's behavior or actions.
9. Rediscover Yourself
All of your attention is now on yourself and it's about time. All your time can now be spent making yourself a better person and rediscovering who you are on your own. It's easy to lose sight of such things when you are going through life with a partner. Go back to your roots and indulge in activities you may have given up on.
10. You don't need to worry about your social media presence
Ugh, remember that picture you had to de-tag because you were standing a little too close to your friend? Or that shot of you sitting on your friend's lap in the background? Your mind is now free from worry since you don't have a parole officer tracking your every move on the Internet.
