The king has returned to his throne. Armin van Buuren needs no introduction. Safely situated at the top of the DJ Mag Top 100 at #1–as he rightfully should be–Armin van Buuren holds the title of the best DJ in the world. So it’s only logical that he’s on the best website in the world, right?

On New Year’s Eve, right before his event at Pier 36, Elite Daily’s Stephen Edwards sat down with the “King of Trance,” Armin van Buuren, for a bit of insight into the global icon. As the host of the astoundingly popular A State Of Trance radio show–estimated to rein in 20 million listeners–and the owner of the hit-making machine Armada Music, Armin van Buuren serves as the pinnacle of entrepreneurship within the electronic dance music space.

In a rapidly changing dance music scene, Armin van Buuren has been one of the few artists who has managed to retain an image of authenticity and achieve an inconceivable level of popularity, recently surpassing 5 million Facebook likes. “I can’t do something I don’t love,” says Armin, “I’ve seen DJs change styles, and I admire them for it. For me, trance has always been close to my heart… I live and breathe dance music.”

Picking up an interest in music at the age of 14, Armin van Buuren quickly fell in love with the world of dance music, but he initially was not positive where this passion would lead him. Armin stated, “I have a law degree. Not necessarily because I like law that much… the majority of it was a bit boring … I always thought ‘I’m going to do music for the rest of my life, but I don’t know if I am going to make enough money to make a living out of it, so let’s just do law so I can always be a lawyer or get a decent job.”

Although dance music indeed became a lucrative opportunity for van Buuren, he does not regret his time spent in law school. Actually, some of the information he acquired proved to be indispensable.

“I used a lot of the knowledge from my law degree for tax [and] for setting up my company Armada Music. So, a lot of the stuff that I found boring when I was reading about it in law school I still use to this day. I’m not a lawyer now, but I think I’m glad I finished the degree!”

In celebration of the 600th episode of the A State Of Trance radio show, van Buuren will be leading the ASOT 600 ‘The Expedition’ World Tour, bringing his world renowned radio show to Kuala Lumpur, Beirut, Den Bosch, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Miami for Ultra Music Festival, and New York, where he will be playing his first show at the world renowned venue, Madison Square Garden.

DJs, take note. Armin van Buuren proves that success does not require the loss of one’s authenticity.
