Author Of New James Bond Book Says Idris Elba Is 'Too Street' To Be 007

A new James Bond novel is on the way, and the author, Anthony Horowitz, recently shared his opinion on whether or not Idris Elba, a rumored frontrunner for the title role in future Bond films, would be a solid fit.

The author, who was selected by Ian Fleming's estate to continue the series, told Daily Mail,

For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It's not a [color] issue. I think he is probably a bit too 'street' for Bond.

Though Horowitz offered Adrian Lester as another possibility, readers were not fans of the writer's use of the term “street,” calling it an example of “coded racism.”

Some Twitter users were more straightforward in their criticisms.

Many were quick to point out the character of James Bond is historically handsome and well-dressed, as well as super badass and deadly.

Finally, there were those who pointed out, adjectives aside, Elba would be acting in the film.

Horowitz responded to fans' criticisms via Twitter, apologizing for his choice of words.

While Elba hasn't commented on Horowitz's statements, my fingers are still all-the-damn-way crossed for him to be the next Bond.
