Jon Stewart Had Considered Quitting “The Daily Show”

Back in 1999, while speaking at a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival, Jon Stewart revealed a very controversial piece of information: only months after he took on the job as host of The Daily Show, he considered throwing in the towel.

“What I did not realize is, a lot of the people who worked there were assholes,” he explained to the crowd, in reference to some of the show’s staff that he’d inherited from previous host Craig Kilborn.

One of those staffers happened to be a man by the name of Stephen Colbert, whose first interaction with Stewart was far different than the way the two friends interact with one another now. The two were constantly competing, which pushed both personalities in a positive direction.

Stewart ultimately decided to keep the job as host, though he added that it took him about two and a half more years to really get comfortable on the job.
