She is one of the world’s most successful pop stars, and one of the wealthiest. But Lady Gaga showed her charitable side on Thursday during her stay in Brazil, when she visited some of the poorest communities in Rio De Janeiro, known as favelas.

The 26-year-old singer ditched her more usual outrageous ensembles to journey into the Cantagalo slum, where she tried her hand at a game of soccer.

‘We even played football. They were so good it was crazy!’ she wrote on her Twitter page.alongside a photograph of herself barefoot, trying out her ball skills.

She was clearly touched by her visit which involved her learning about programs in the neighborhood to benefit the local children.

‘Today was the best day I’ve ever had, had so much fun ,’ she tweeted. ‘I’ll never forget Rio, you lit my heart into flames.’

The You and I singer, who is currently in Rio as part of her Born This Way Ball world tour, looked relatively low key in a colourful white dress and high heeled black shoes which she soon took off to go barefoot.

However, she still managed to flash a little flesh, with one side of the dress showing several slits down her thigh.

She planted a kiss on one delighted youngster as she posed for photographs on the back of a motorbike, before entertaining a group of children with a song.

The star signed autographs for the group of excited children, who clutched at her hands enthusiastically.

At one point, she strolled down the street holding a blue rose, and posed for pictures, while the youngsters captured the images on their camera-phones.

Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, also revealed she is donating $1 million to the Red Cross to help victims of Superstorm Sandy, which decimated many of her east coast childhood haunts and home town of New York City.
