Former New York Mayor Ed Koch Dies At 88
Ed Koch — one of the most popular and outspoken mayors in the history of New York City — died early this morning at the age of 88.
The former mayor had been hospitalized earlier in January after seeking treatment for a lung complication. Koch was also hospitalized last September for anemia and he battled pneumonia last December.
Koch served three terms as mayor of New York City from 1978-1989, rescuing the city from tough financial times.
Ed Koch once described himself by saying:
“I’m the sort of person who will never get ulcers. Why? Because I say exactly what I think. I am the sort of person who might give other people ulcers.”
Upon completing his three terms as mayor, Koch served as a judge on “The People’s Court” from 1997-1999.
