SpongeBob is making a big splash of late. First, we heard that an actual Krusty Krab restaurant is being built in the West Bank of Palestine. Then, the first trailer for the new film "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" dropped last week.

So, while we wait anxiously for the release of that film, we thought we'd take a look back at the series that started it all. Bikini Bottom is magical place filled with hilarious characters like Patrick and Sandy.

You can eat delicious food at the Krusty Krab, and you can live in a freakin' pineapple.

It's also a place full of mystery. There's a ton you probably don't know about bikini bottom and its denizens. But have no fear. We're here to help you out.

1. The Krusty Krab is fashioned after a lobster trap.

2. The main characters were inspired by the seven deadly sins. Mr. Krabs is greed. Plankton is envy. Patrick is sloth. Sandy is pride. Squidward is wrath. Gary is gluttony. And SpongeBob is lust.

3. The title for the 4th season's 20th episode was "Best Day Ever."

4. SpongeBob's birthday is July 14, 1986.

5. And Mr. Krabs was born in 1942.

6. The woman who voices Karen Plankton is married to the man who voices SpongeBob.

7. Every time something terrible happens in the show, a fish named Fred yells, "My leg!"

8. Patrick and Gary are supposed to be first cousins.

9. Squidward is actually not a squid, but an octopus.

18. Bikini Bottom is based on the actual island of Bikini Atoll, which is a part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

19. A fungus that was discovered in 2011 was named after SpongeBob. It's called Spongiforma squarepantsii.
