It’s pretty sad that in 2014, no major Hollywood studio has released a 3D-animated movie starring a black protagonist. But all that is set to change (it’s about time) with a soon-to-be released film, “Home.”

DreamWorks Animation Studios will finally include a black female as the animated movie’s heroine, adding her to the ranks of all the other characters (green ogres and talking “Antz” included) who have previously starred front and center in a feature film.

Disney came closest to having a black main character with the 2D “Princess and the Frog,” released in 2009. But as far as animation companies go, they’re notoriously behind the times on these sorts of things. Pixar, for example, has never featured a non-white character or voice talent at the center of one of its movies.

“Home” will change all that, by featuring Tip, “an enterprising girl” who befriends the alien Oh, whose fellow ETs have taken over Earth. The two must learn to work together in order to reconcile their populations, in true hero form.

Tip will be voiced by fellow rebel, Rihanna, of all people.

No Girls Allowed? Why ‘Fight Club’ Is For The Ladies, Too

When I was a teenager, I saw “Fight Club” for the first time. I was completely obsessed. I proudly displayed a poster with the famous carved-out bar of soap over my dorm room bed. It wasn’t because Brad Pitt was shirtless for 90 percent of the film or because Edward Norton gave a knockout performance […]

A 15-year-old Scottish boy named Morgan Spence made some of the most impressive Lego recreations I’ve ever seen. Spence, using nothing but the colored blocks, recreated iconic scenes from classic films. He didn’t just make static scenes. He turned them into short, stop-motion videos. He did scenes from major films like “Pulp Fiction,” “The Shining,” […]

Baristas Compete In Spelling Bee To Prove They Can Spell Names Correctly (Video)

It’s a commonly accepted theory that the coffee shops of America are staffed by people with liberal arts degrees who couldn’t find jobs in the real world. But if that’s really the case, you’d expect them to spell people’s names correctly far more often than they do. Yesterday was National Coffee Day, and to celebrate, […]

Photo Fail Ends Up Giving Girl The Ultimate Selfie-Taking Arm

Panoramic photos can be invaluable tools for capturing scenes that an ordinary picture couldn’t, but it helps if the subject of your picture stays in one place when you’re taking the snapshot. A panorama is essentially a digital quilt of similar photos, so when you have an object moving with the camera, you can end […]
