This 'Game Of Thrones' Couple Was Actually Improvised And Our Hearts Are So Full

Every year, it seems Game of Thrones delights us with odd character pairings that work, despite all evidence to the contrary. From Tyrion and Bronn back in Season 1 to the Hound and Arya in Season 4, there's always something each season.

Last season, that pairing was one that never actually got off the ground, but not for at least one character's lack of trying: Tormund Giantsbane and Brienne of Tarth.

Turns out part of the reason it never went anywhere is this couple, who fans have been shipping since they laid eyes on each other, was because it never in the script to begin with. The scenes between them were completely improvised.

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss fessed up about the favored couple when asked by Entertainment Weekly if there would be more come Season 7.

Dan Weiss said there was barely any stage directions for them in either the dinner table scene or the leaving of Castle Black:

...the episode where they're all leaving Castle Black together and there's a shot — it wasn't scripted at all — of two of them on horseback and she looks at him and he smiles at her. It's not something you could ever write. It's just this moment where this guy is creeping out on her and he smiles in a way that makes her very uncomfortable and she just looks away. I saw it 150 times and every time it made me laugh; it's purely the two of them.

Will that change this coming season? Will having seen the fan reactions change the way the characters are written? This being GoT, that could be, but not the way we would like.

Says Benioff:

It inspires us because we need to kill one of them now because there can't be a happy ending or any romantic connection on the show. But we're not going to tell you which one.

Game of Thrones returns to TV July 16. Until then, we'll be holding vigil for Brienne and Tormund.
