A 'Pretty Little Liars' Spinoff Is Officially Happening & Here's Everything We Know

Freeform

Just when you thought Pretty Little Liars was done playing with our minds, here comes one more twist. The long-running teen murder mystery drama is getting a spinoff series called Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists to keep the franchise going after the main series' big finale in June. Freeform has ordered a pilot for the new show, which will be set in a new town, but star a pair of familiar faces for PLL fans, according to Deadline. Get all the juicy info on the Pretty Little Liars spinoff right here.

The big news is that the stars of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists will be two liars that fans are already very familiar with: Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal. As fans of the show are well aware, Alison and Mona have a very complicated history with one another, as former high school nemeses turned tenuous frenemies at the end of the seven-season series. Alison was the queen bee at Rosewood High, who teased and mocked the unpopular girl Mona throughout their time at the school. It was this torment that led Mona to use her skills at manipulation to make Alison disappear at the beginning of the series, and mess with Alison's friends as the initial "A" text-torturer. Although Mona and Alison never fully reconciled, their animosity somewhat lessened towards the end of the show when the liars had to band together to take on more pressing issues.

The new Perfectionists spinoff (which is based on the book series of the same name by PLL author Sara Shepard) will take Alison and Mona out of Rosewood and introduce them into the mysterious new town of Beacon Heights. True to its Perfectionists name, Beacon Heights is described as a seemingly perfect town full of overachievers, but nothing in the town is as it seems. Apparently, the stress of keeping up this perfect-seeming facade quickly leads to a murderous twist, throwing Alison and Mona into the middle of yet another thrilling whodunnit.

The spinoff series announcement comes about three months after the series finale of Pretty Little Liars aired at the end of June. The end of that series saw Alison proposing to her girlfriend Emily, and having given birth to their babies. Meanwhile, Mona is shown running a doll shop in France where she has imprisoned of the show's final antagonists Alex and Mary, and she's dating the police officer that arrested them. It will definitely be interesting to see how The Perfectionists will transplant Alison and Mona into this new town of Beacon Heights, and whether Alison's fiancé (or maybe wife at this point) and co-parent Emily Fields will wind up being a part of the series as well. This may prove difficult since Shay Mitchell is already starring in the upcoming Lifetime crime drama You.

The Perfectionists will actually be the second time Freeform has attempted a Pretty Little Liars spinoff. Back in 2013, the network picked up a series centered on the PLL character Caleb Rivers called Ravenswood, but that only lasted for ten episodes before getting canceled due to low ratings. Hopefully, The Perfectionists won't meet the same fate.

Although it's too early for us to hear about a premiere date for Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, fans can probably expect the pilot to drop sometime in 2018. That may sound like a long time to wait, but the good news is that it gives fans plenty of time to read Sara Shepard's two-book Perfectionists series! The first book The Perfectionists is available on Amazon here, and the follow-up The Good Girls is available on Amazon here.
