It looks as though your favorite celebrity gossip website has run into a bit of trouble…TMZ edited its video late Thursday night of a teen’s murder outside a Hollywood nightclub, as advertisers abandoned the website and a Change.org petition received more than 200,000 signatures!
The nearly two-minute clip showed a large number of clubgoers brawling in a parking lot before one man pulls out a concealed weapon and fires two shots into the chest of another clubgoer.
The video editors at TMZ then had it replay the murder in slow motion, revealing a man — identified by the website and the victim’s family as Andre Lowe — in jeans and a black hoodie lying face down on the ground.
Jason Andrews, the uncle of the victim, started the Change.org petition last week, calling on advertisers to abandon TMZ.
Since then, nearly 25 brands — including Chase, Toyota and Comedy Central — have dropped their ad campaigns on the site’s video page!
“TMZ’s sensationalistic coverage of a regular teenager’s tragic murder added salt to the wound for our family,” Andrews said in the statement.
The video had received thousands of views on TMZ and on its YouTube page in the 11 days before it was appropriately edited.
