11 Best Tweets From Arya’s Emotional ‘Game Of Thrones’ Reunion That Will Make You Sob

HBO

Game of Thrones just hit the fans right where it hurts. Arya Stark was finally reunited with her direwolf Nymeria while heading back to Winterfell on Sunday's new episode, but it wasn't the beautiful reunion that fans wanted.

Nope, instead, Arya recognized Nymeria and tried to get her beloved canine to come with her back home to Winterfell, only to get the cold shoulder in return as Nymeria flew back into the woods with her new pack.

Of course, this broke the hearts of pretty much every GoT viewer, many of whom expressed their sorrow and some jokes on Twitter with the most heartbreaking, best tweets about Arya and Nymeria's reunion on Game of Thrones:

I guess we're all just going to have to say goodbye to Nymeria. On the bright side, now that Arya has all those assassin and face-changing skills, she doesn't really need Nymeria to help her take down her enemies. Still, it would've been nice to see her reunited with her Season 1 bestie.

There's also a nice parallel in Nymeria's refusal to travel with Arya and Arya's own statement in Season 1. In the after show, Game of Thrones' show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss pointed out that, back when Arya first received Nymeria, her then-alive father Ned Stark tried to excite Arya about her royal future by saying how exciting it would be for her to be a lady and eventually a queen one day. But young Arya responded, "That's not me."

It's the same phrase Arya used when Nymeria turned her back on Arya. As Nymeria walked back into the woods, Arya whispered, "That's not you," realizing that the direwolf was meant to be with a pack in the wild and not wandering the seven kingdoms as Arya's pet.

So, as heartbreaking as that Nymeria scene was, it actually does have a pretty nice sentiment if you can get past your sorrow of Arya and her direwolf never being together again. In the end, they were just too similar to ever end up together.
