Donut Macarons Are Coming To NYC, And Life Will Never Be The Same

by Gillian Fuller

If there's one thing New Yorkers like, it's hybridized desserts: Cake popsCronutsBrooksters, you get the idea.

Now, we have a new reason to stand in hours-long lines for a bite of something sweet, and that reason is macaron donuts.

Created by French pâtissière François Payard — who also happens to be the mastermind behind macaron ice cream sandwiches — macaron donuts are exactly what they sound like, a mash-up of the classic French macarons and classic American donuts.

Payard developed the colorful confections in honor of Macaron Day, observed on March 20. The holiday, invented by Payard, is itself a hybrid: A celebration of both the beloved French cookie and a celebration of charity.

For each macaron sold, participating bakeries will make a donation to City Harvest, a local nonprofit which aims to eradicate hunger in NYC. Pretty sweet, right? (Sorry, had to).

The 'macaronuts' will be available at all François Payard locations in New York City staring March 20. Currently, only one flavor, strawberries and cream, is planned for the launch. However, a rep for Payard told said,

Based on the popularity of the strawberries and cream flavor…[Payard] will continue to develop more flavors.

So, my friends, consider it your civic duty to buy as many of these pint-size pastries as you possibly can — with luck, they will be given permanent residency.
