It’s the dance move everyone and their mothers are talking about: twerking.

According to Oxford Dictionary (that’s right, freakin’ Oxford Dictionary!), to twerk is to “dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.” A.K.A., it’s the dance move that took Miley Cyrus from an innocent little girl, to a naughty little girl.

Though Cyrus’s new music video actually doesn’t include a twerking segment, she has becoming virtually synonymous with the term. The dance move is so big, it even spurred Jimmy Kimmel to pull off arguably the greatest viral prank of all time.

But where did the move come from? What’s the history behind it? When did it become so massive? We decided to call in some experts and find out. With the help of Yahoo! and Addvocate, we present to you the greatest (and possibly only) twerking infograph you will ever see:
