This One Tweet Shows The Hypocrisy In Trump's "Support" Of LGBTQ+ Individuals

Sigh, Donald Trump. Today the 45th president of the United States announced via Twitter that he plans to ban transgender people from joining and participating in the military, due to "tremendous medical costs and disruption" he claims they cause. Pinch yourself if you need to but, yes, you are still alive in 2017. The interesting part about all of this is that it's exactly what Donald Trump said he would not do to the LGBTQ+ community while he was running for president. In the wake of him sharing his plan to ban transgender people from the military, never forget this tweet that shows the hypocrisy in Trump's support of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Let's take a moment to fact check this tweet. Hillary Clinton had actually long positioned herself as an ally of LGBTQ+ people. In 2011, she declared that "gay rights are human rights," according to The Washington Post.

Still, that wasn't sufficient for Donald Trump.

He even once called himself the "real friend" to the LGBTQ+ community (in comparison to Clinton) during a June 2016 speech following the tragic Orlando shooting that took place at a LGBTQ+ friendly nightclub, according to CNN.

During the speech, he also said,

Hillary Clinton can never claim to be a friend of the gay community as long as she continues to support immigration policies that bring Islamic extremists into our country and who suppress women, gays and anyone else who doesn't share their views or values.

The president, who championed himself as a "friend" and someone who "will fight for" LGBTQ+ people did not acknowledge Pride month in June, even though he acknowledged things like Caribbean-American heritage, African-American music, and homeownership that month, according to Newsweek.

In February, he overturned the bathroom freedoms that former President Barack Obama set in place for transgender students just before he completed his term. That even inspired Caitlyn Jenner to call Donald Trump out on his hypocrisy.

Over a year later, Trump's tweet banning transgender individuals from military service proves the hypocrisy in his tweet claiming to stand by the LGBTQ+ community.

Now that transgender people are banned from the military, Donald Trump seems to be the farthest he's ever been from ally-ship.

With a "friend" like that, who needs enemies? The LGBTQ+ community deserves much better than this from a president who declared he would stand by and protect them.
