11 Ways To Find Happiness In Your 20s, No Matter What Life Throws At You

by Alexa Mellardo

No matter where you're at in life, one thing will always stay true: You're the master of your own happiness.

So take the steering wheel, and cruise on into the sunset, because it's a beauty.

Life is too damn short to waste any time or energy on the things we can't control or change (no matter how frustrating that may be).

We must accept them, and move on with our heads held high, because they didn't get the best of us.

It's important to focus our energy on the things we CAN control, and embrace them wholeheartedly.

This wild world we live in today throws unexpected obstacles in our paths. People will inevitably disappoint us, even the ones we believed we could trust until the end. We learn how to prevail.

Here are 11 ways to find happiness in your 20s, no matter what life throws at you.

1. Ditch the toxic people who bring you down, and surround yourself with the GOOD gems.

They're the genuine, beautiful souls who would never think about stabbing you in the back, or tampering with your heart.

2. Pave your own path in life.

Don't follow in someone else's footsteps; create the unique route that's right for YOU.

Going through life living the dream someone else picked out for you never ends well.

It's totally OK (and sometimes way more exciting) to take the road less traveled; you just have to exude the independence and confidence it takes to slay it, and that road is all yours.

3. Find yourself; don't let your significant other define you.

Sure, you're irrevocably in love with your boyfriend. But, a healthy relationship takes opinions, decisions and input from both sides to make it something spectacular.

Bring what YOU have to offer the relationship to the table, because that's what made your man fall in love with you in the first place. If you let your boyfriend define you and all of your interests, you'll end up feeling so lost.

Don't ever lose sight of yourself, and continue to grow as individuals, in addition to as a couple.

4. Dedicate time to hobbies you love.

... And embrace new ones you've dreamed of doing.

5. Cross as many travel destinations off of your bucket list as you can.

Feeding your wanderlust is a high like no other, and when you're in your 20s, it's the prime time to satisfy your desire to explore.

6. You do you, and don't GAF what anyone else thinks.

Focusing on other people instead of yourself is a mistake many of us tend to make. We can become so wrapped up in other people's lives, that we forget about our own.

7. Don't ever be blindsided by jealousy.

It's a toxic trail to follow, and it will only make you miserable.

8. Get a pet.

… Because, those puppy eyes, though! An adorable furry friend who's sweetly waiting for you every day when you come home from work? INSTANT happiness right there.

9. Exercise your stresses away.

Relieve any unnecessary stress by hitting up the gym, or signing up for a yoga class.

Focus your mind and body. It'll make you feel so much better.

10. Make plans with friends after work.

It's easy to get stuck into the routine of getting up, going to work and then heading home to chill in front of the TV.

Sure, you don't want to dish out extra cash on a daily basis for happy hour, but make plans when you can, and put yourself out there! It'll break up the week perfectly, too.

11. Live on your own.

Taking this step will make you grow up, and feel SO free, too.

You may have learned the hard way that feeling sorry for yourself will get you nowhere fast.

You're only benefitting by picking yourself up and finding the glimmer of light in a tunnel of gloomy darkness. And let's be real here, no one finds a sad sack attractive in any way, shape or form.

When you're in a sour spot and everything seems to be going wrong, that advice may make you want to roll your eyes… but it's true, so listen to your heart.
