Let’s be very honest with ourselves. We are all just a bunch of savages on the pursuit of happiness. Most of us, however, unintentionally decide to make life a lot more complicated than it already is which takes us off track from reaching the goal of eternal fulfillment and satisfaction.

Many tend to attach their happiness to achievement and then look for it in all the wrong places. To truly embark on the pursuit of happiness, you must simplify your thought process and your perception of the world around you. You need to get back to the basics by changing your relationship with the external in addition to the way you believe in yourself and your future.

After simplifying your pursuit of happiness, you will efficiently be able to prioritize what should take up your energy, time and thought. Then it will be much easier to find your true purpose and use what means most to you to make a valuable difference in your life and the lives of those around you as well.

Here are eight ways to do just that:

1. Lose yourself in something that moves you.

To truly enjoy life and flourish within its beautiful opportunities, you need to loosen up and not be so serious. You need to lose yourself in the moment and take in the different experiences, tasks and people you will encounter each day. This happens most when you are facing some sort of challenge or when the creativity inside of you is finally let out of its cage.

It happens sometimes while you’re playing sports or listening to music or are lost in a good book, or even when you feel completely enveloped by another’s love. There is a great amount of intellectual or emotional stimulation that occurs when you connect with someone who shares your point of view.

In short, long term happiness isn’t just about conscious achievements but also your sub-conscious mind naturally intertwining with ideas, passions, people, work and stories that move you.

2. Know what you want and commit to it.

So many people are afraid to commit to anything in this day and age. It truly is amazing what you can do when you commit to a goal that you know will make you a better person. It is what gives you the sense of urgency and sets you on a more certain path to success.

If you can honestly say that you are fully aware of your desires and what they entail and that you are devoted to doing what it takes to make a name for yourself, you are already in a highly spirited state of mind and are well on your way to the pursuit of happiness.

Being aware and committed means you are informed – alert, knowledgeable, prepared – and you have the mindset to visualize, strategize, focus, and achieve.

3. Don’t ever let anyone crush your dreams.

Do you know how many people are going to try to tell you that you can’t do that or that you will never be able to accomplish your goal? A startling amount at the least. Why? Because they never had the courage to reach for the stars and they want to see you quit just like they did. Stop sharing your dream and vision with people that hold you back because negative reinforcement is never good for you. Misery loves company.

If you’re passionate about a particular career path, don’t ask anyone you don’t really trust for advice. Just go out there and do it. If you mess up, get back up and keep trying. No matter how many times you fall, you will always be making yourself a much stronger, more worldly and resourceful person as a result.

This is how you become worthy of the rewards you have always dreamed of. Don’t settle for the bullshit pedestrian lives everyone else did. Make your own journey instead.

4. Find the right thing to do everyday.

Whether it be a job, a hobby or even a company you started it is important to find what will give you the desire to get up every morning. You need to discover what truly makes you feel like life is worth living, that you are grateful to be on this earth, not just what society wants you to do. Do you really want to be dreading each new day, wishing you could just sleep all day instead of go to work?

When you want to run out of bed every day and refuse to leave the workplace because you love what you do is when your true purpose. Happiness is all about spending life that way you want to. This is especially true when it comes to lifelong work. Choose something you know you will look forward to doing every day.

When you appreciate what you do for a living, happiness and success will tag along.

5. Focus on the way you want to feel.

You will begin to become happier and more successful the minute you decide to be. You need to understand how you actually want to feel each day because that is the most useful form of clarity that you can possibly attain.

Your thoughts are what creates your reality and what you envision is what you attract into your life. Those who say they can and those who say they can’t are both correct. Those who think their life sucks end up with shitty lives, those who think they will do something special actually do so. At the end of the day it all comes down to your belief in yourself and how far you want to take it.

This mindset is the magic ingredient that helps you persevere in the face of challenges, setbacks, pain, and even physical injury.

6. It’s all about your perspective.

Your choice of perspective has the power to build or demolish your life as you know it. Your mind has the uninhibited ability to take any experience and create a meaning that weakens you or make you jump for joy. Forget all the reasons why something won’t work and figure out the one good reason that it will. If you think it is possible, it will happen.

7. Drop the comparisons.

If you want to be miserable, keep comparing your life to everyone that is in your Facebook feed. Sometimes the hardest part of the journey is understanding that it is okay to just be who you are and where you are. Don’t feel sorry for yourself because you think you’re missing out on excitement or good fortune. Always move forward by not letting other people’s achievments bring you down.

Imagine how different your life would be if you stopped judging yourself? Negative thoughts about you you or your future will never help you get what you want, so push them as far away from your mind as possible.

8. Help others smile.

In your pursuit of happiness – as unique as it may be to your own specific needs – don’t forget that you’re a member of a world that is far greater than yourself.

There are simple things you can do daily to lift the human spirits around you – things that are effortless and free and related to your pursuit. And best of all, happiness begets happiness; so when you do these things to help others, you don’t just lift their spirits, you lift your own as well.

The pursuit of happiness is a lot more simple than most think. It doesn’t have to do with money or status or what other people think of you.
