The Past Will Always Haunt You

by Ashley Fern

Is there really such a thing as starting over? A clean slate is something many seek to attain, but many fail to achieve. Every decision we make in our lives has an impact on our future, regardless of how large or minimal it is. It is unavoidable and problematic because at one moment something may seem like a good idea, but somewhere down the road it can come back and bite you in the ass.

Some decisions you choose to make can have dire consequences that will follow you for the rest of your life. Breaking the law in any aspect is something that you will have to own up to on future employment papers and admission to educational establishments. Sure maybe your record can be cleared, but the trauma is sure to follow you around.

No matter how hard you try, your past will always be by your side. Certain experiences will trigger emotional responses that will bring back to your past and you have no choice but to relive those memories. Things do mold you and make you who you are, but at the same time, some choices can haunt you for the worse.

Bad relationships can be traumatizing and the effects they have on your psyche can and most often do follow you into future relationships. Trust issues are based on fears and fear is a defense mechanism to prevent people from getting into similar situations. Every person is different and there are many ways of overcoming your fears, but when something is so traumatizing, it is often hard to simply let it go.

“Do you ever feel about a terrible experience or a terrible thing from your past comes back to haunt you? Such as when you have forgotten or have no though of that terrible situation you were in and all of a sudden it comes back to you?”

Healing is exceedingly important after a painful experience because many people make the error of repressing their emotions that usually cause problems later on. The past will always come back to haunt you unless you find a way to work out the problems and let them go.

“There are different ways the past comes into the present. If it is through the memory of past events, you can change your thinking to leave the past in the past. There are different ways to do this — it could be that time heals it or it could be that you learn how to release memories that don’t serve you.”

We are an impulsive generation and we need to think about our decisions wholeheartedly before making them. Too many times do we fail to recognize what the consequences may be and rush into action. Our actions are what define us, so it is important always to think things through because they will more than definitely affect our futures.

Often times, people tend to linger in the past in order to make sense of it. Your past serves as a learning experience, so this does make sense to a certain extent. However, if you are only focusing on your past, then you are most certainly limiting your future. As you mature with life experience, it can help sometimes to let go or to get a perspective, but even then, many people have memories they just feel stuck with. Sometimes people do romanticize the past, and sometimes it's just about how to deal with certain experiences or where to "file" them in our memories.
