Fu*k Mediocrity And Become A Legend

Preston Waters
The fear that should be dominating your life is not a mild case of the herpes, but rather the doom of being mediocre. There should be nothing you are trying to avoid more than being the average everyday pedestrian that roams this world with no purpose, an empty suit with a miserable routine lifestyle enveloped in dissatisfaction and regret.

Being mediocre means that you never had the guts to reach for your goals. It means that you settled for the easy way out and chose a life void of passion or development. Nobody remembers the person that just coasted by and didn’t make an effort to create the life he or she always wanted.

What so many people forget in this world is how short life really is. It passes you by faster than you ever expect it to and there are no rehearsals or do-overs. You get one shot at success, one shot at fulfillment and tranquility. The saddest thing in the world is a wasted talent and each and every one of us has some sort of talent or artistry hidden within us. It calls to us every day because it wants to expose its beauty and love to the rest of the world.

When it’s all said and done, the last thing you ever want to regret is that you never decided to go outside of your comfort zone and try your best to leave your mark on this world. In a world filled with so meany meaningless distractions, we sometimes forget what really is important to us and what really makes life special. We all want to become legends, the complete opposite of the mediocre pedestrian.

We hate the concept of mediocrity because it means you turn into a sheep following another sheep that is dressed up in lion’s clothes. You are a lion, you are a leader and you should be the one in control of your life, not just settling for what society is offering to you. Do you really want to be known as the one that decided to take the easy way out?

I say fuck mediocrity. Stick a sword in its gut and watch it bleed to death right in front of your eyes. Kill it without remorse. Fight it. Destroy it. Replace it with greatness. 2013 is the year you become a legend. This is a fact. It is an expectation, not a goal. If you just set your mind to it, anything is possible…

The Expectations

To stop the evil of mediocrity in its tracks, you need to set some ground rules for yourself that you will follow religiously each day. That means no more laziness, distractions, putting things off until tomorrow or doing anything that pulls you or your mind away from your objective. Now, what should we expect from ourselves? These aren’t goals, hopes, and pipe-dreams, but expectations. I will‘s, not I hope’s.

The Expectation of Success

To get to that legendary status, you have a long road ahead of you. But don’t be afraid. What you need to do is expect greatness to emerge both on the outside and also within yourself in the process. Work hard and stay committed to your goal. As the saying goes, “luck happens when hard work meets opportunity.” Great people do great work. Mediocre people do mediocre work.

Your work won’t even seem like work once you have discovered your passion-driven purpose in life. Nothing can get in your way if your purpose fuels you to get up in the morning every day. Acknowledging your purpose will give you a sense of perseverance that will prevent you from giving up no matter how impossible your goal may seem. If you believe in it and you love it, somehow some way, it will work itself out.

Each business has goals and benchmarks that coincide with experience and evolution. The best goals are process driven expectations. They aren’t goals at all, but expectations of the quantity and quality of the work we can put in. That is where you need to strive to be the best at your  craft.

Our work and our career expectations should never be focused on the end result but the process instead. The process is what creates the end result because it is within all the hard work that you are subconsciously growing to become worthy of the life you have always wanted.

Compare it to preparing for a boxing match and all the training that is necessary before the big fight. That is how it works in business as well.

Beside each expectation, determine a time that it should take to finish. Time each task. This will help you stay on track and ignore distractions along the way.

There is an old saying that goes, “the day you stop learning is the day you can consider yourself dead.” Life is all about new experiences and learning something new everyday because there is just so much knowledge and insightful advice to be passed around. To move forward we must improve our abilities to produce and the only way human beings improve is by learning.

For some people it could be reading books, for others it could be watching films or listening to TED talks. Whatever it may be, we are fortunate enough to live in a world where there are so many educational opportunities available to us for free every single day. Take advantage of this gift. You can become a smarter person every hour of every day.

You’ll soon discover that every successful person has had a mentor. It is impossible to effectively conquer the curve balls life throws at you on your own. A mentor is the most powerful ally we can have in our quest. Approach people who have accomplished what you’d like to accomplish and seek wisdom in their advice.

Sustained Ambition

We live in a pretty funny world where on everyone pretends to be ambitious for one day: January 1st. Too bad that ambition fades away more and more every day that follows. Don’t let your laziness or distractions take over your thought process. Focus is everything and where you apply your focus is the direction your life will take.

Stop giving yourself that bullshit reason that helps you sleep better at night when you know you got nothing done. Understand the compass of where you want to go. Why do you want this, why do you want that? Make it emotional. But also make it measurable. Know, very specifically, what success will look like, then track your progress. Know what you have to do to make it happen every single day of the year.

Let your ambition drive you each and everyday and let its fruitful possibilities wake you up every morning before your alarm clock does.

Resources are also very important on your journey to become a legend. Invest in yourself and in your future. Obtain the things that you know will help you become a master of your craft. They’ll make you feel more fit for success, which will seem more like a certainty each time you add to your pool of resources.

The Mission: To Be Legendary

The plan is to take over the world, the goal is to accomplish the plan as fast as possible. Stick up a huge middle finger to the concept of mediocrity and laugh at those who decide to take the easy way out. Take that tenacity into everything you do this year.

Take that venomous hatred towards being average to every endeavor. Make it your enemy. Beat it to a pulp, have your legendary hand raised in the end.

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.- Steve Jobs
