Ben & Jerry's Supports Marriage Equality By Making A Huge Change To Its Menu

Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's made an exciting announcement on Wednesday, May 24, and it wasn't about a tasty new flavor.

Instead, the company declared a new rule that bans customers in 26 Australian stores from ordering two scoops of the same flavor as a protest over Australia's Marriage Act, which doesn't accept same-sex marriages.

In other words, Ben & Jerry's isn't letting customers order two scoops of the same flavor because two people of the same sex cannot be legally married in Australia.

They're making a difference, one scoop at a time.

The U.S.-based ice cream company released a statement that further explains their decision to initiate the new rule, where they claim "love comes in all flavors."

A heartfelt excerpt from the announcement says,

Imagine heading down to your local Scoop Shop to order your favourite two scoops of Cookie Dough in a waffle cone. But you find out you are not allowed – Ben & Jerry's has banned two scoops of the same flavour. You'd be furious! But this doesn't even begin to compare to how furious you would be if you were told you were not allowed to marry the person you love. So we are banning two scoops of the same flavor and encouraging our fans to contact their MPs to tell them that the time has come – make marriage equality legal!

To show even more support for the cause, Australian Ben & Jerry's stores will be providing post boxes where customers can write cards to their MP about why they should support marriage equality.

According to the announcement, the postcards will be delivered before their budget is announced at the final parliamentary session on June 13.

However, if you don't live by a Ben & Jerry's store, the company provides a link to Australia's Equality Campaign website where customers can sign up to show their politicians that they support marriage equality.

An excerpt from the end of the ice cream announcement says, "At Ben & Jerry's we love love, and we think most Australians do too."

I always know Ben & Jerry's was my favorite.
