‘Meteor Rush’ Begins For Fragments Of Russian Meteor Worth More Than $15,000

After the meteor shower that rained upon the Ural Mountains in Russia on Friday, the search for pieces of the meteorite has sent the country into a frenzy.

In fact, fragments of the 40-ton meteor which injured over 1,200 people could fetch more than $15,000.

One Russian buyer was offering 500,000 roubles ($17,000) for a single rock.

The meteor rush comes after the metal and rock from space came crashing into the atmosphere at a speed of at least 33,000 mph.

When it crashed through the atmosphere, it broke up, causing widespread damage in the area.

The focus of the meteor rush is outside the town of Chebarkul, where must of the larger pieces are believed to have landed.

The fragments of rock and metal have become a hot commodity this weekend.

“The web is awash with people saying they want to buy this stuff,” said Oleg Karpov, a Chelyabinsk local. “Maybe this thing was not that bad after all if a few of us make some money out of it.”

If you’re in the area, look around for any piece of meteorite, it could be worth its weight in gold and then some!
