This Drone Is Dropping Abortion Pills Over Ireland

ATTENTION, WORLD! ATTENTION, WORLD!

Good morning and welcome to the future, ladies and gentleman. In case you haven't heard (or just blatantly didn't know like me), abortion is illegal in Ireland.

With the exception of very limited circumstances, it is still a criminal offense in the Republic of Ireland. In Northern Ireland, it is so illegal that if an Irish woman buys a legal abortion pill in another country, she could still face life in prison in her own nation.

Yeah, it's really illegal.

Needless to say, abortion rights activists are not quite pleased with this whole sitch. And they're not going to just sit around and do nothing about it.

Activist groups from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are going to have a drone fly abortion pills from the Republic of Ireland across the border to Northern Ireland in an attempt to draw attention to their cause.

The drone will take off on Tuesday at 10 am from Omeath, County Louth (in the Republic of Ireland) and land near Narrow Water in Warrenpoint, County Down (in Northern Ireland). The groups responsible are Alliance for Choice, Rosa, Labour Alternative and Women on Waves.

A spokesperson from Rosa, Rita Harrold, told Mashable,

It is an all-island act of solidarity between women in the north and the south to highlight the violation of human rights caused by the existing laws that criminalize abortion in both the north and south of Ireland except in very limited circumstances.

Harrold continued that the campaigners, who are not pregnant, will actually take the mifepristone pills themselves to show Irish women just how safe they really are to take.

Apparently, this isn't the first "abortion drone" either. The first one took off in June of last year and it was flown from Frankfurt, Germany to Słubice in Poland.
