Senator Apparently Caught Calling Trump "Crazy" On Microphone — LISTEN

Two senators of separate party affiliations mistakingly recorded themselves in a conversation that appeared to be about President Donald Trump. Senators Jack Reed and Susan Collins's conversation was caught on a hot mic, the Washington Post reports. At the beginning of the recording, Democratic Senator Reed can be heard saying, "I think he's crazy." In response, Republican Senator Collins can be heard saying, "I'm worried."

The seemingly private conversation was recorded because Sen. Collins didn't turn off her mic after the conclusion of a subcommittee hearing on Tuesday, July 25, the Washington Post reports. The recording can be heard below:

The hearing was held by the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies subcommittee, which falls under the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Collins, the Republican from Maine, serves as chairwoman. Reed, who represents Rhode Island in the Senate, serves as ranking Democrat, or vice chairman.

The subject of the conversation appeared to be in relation to the task of settling a federal budget. Both Collins and Reed seemed to be worried that the president lacked enough understanding to help facilitate the process.

Reed is heard saying,

You know, this thing — if we don't get a budget deal, we're going to be paralyzed. DOD [Department of Defense] is going to be paralyzed, everybody is going to be paralyzed. And he hasn't said one word.

Collins, for her part, seemed to question whether Trump understood the basics about the federal budget. She said,

I don't think he knows there is a BCA [Budget Control Act] or anything.

The BCA is law that impacts the budget negotiation process. The recorded conversation seems to add legitimacy to rumors of Republican senators worrying that Trump doesn't understand some of the fundamental ways government works.

There's another politician discussed in the recording.

During the latter part of the private conversation, Reed and Collins can be heard talking about the congressman who bizarrely implied he'd challenge her to a duel -- yes, like Alexander Hamilton.

Reed tells Collins,

Trust me. Do you know why he challenged you to a duel? 'Cause you could beat the sh*t out of him.

Collins later goes on to say,

I don't mean to be unkind, but he's so unattractive it's unbelievable. Did you see the picture of him in his pajamas next to this bunny -- Playboy bunny?

Here is the infamous picture to which Collins was referring.

We're done here.
