The 10 Apps Everyone Needs To Download Right Now

by Ashley Fern

There’s an app for that! Literally, there is an app for virtually anything and everything you could ever hope for. As technology is ever-expanding, so are the applications that go along with its latest innovations. I don’t even know the last time I used my computer for something that my phone or iPad couldn’t do.

Apps make everything much more efficient and concise. There is no more clicking through various links to reach your destination, you simply click the icon on your tablet's screen and you are good to go.

We are all familiar with the typical apps like Facebook, Instagram, WebMD, IMDB and Moviefone. Social media apps are no longer the go-to mobile entertainers, as there are hundreds of different kinds of entertainment applications readily available.

When was the last time you even searched your web browser for a movie time? Probably not since before you had an iPhone. Smartphones are in higher demand than any other type of mobile device and the reasoning behind it could not be more apparent. According to Huffington Post, approximately half of Americans are using smartphones on a daily basis.

Let’s take a look at the best apps for Gen-Y, and everyone for that matter.

Venmo: “the best way to pay your friends. It's simple, fun and free to use.”

Some people either swear by this app or they have never heard of it yet. I am here to tell you that this is the future of financial transactions, so download this ASAP. Anyone can download this application regardless of their fiscal institution, to pay friends for select purchases. All you have to do is type in your basic banking account information and you are all set.

Next, you follow your friends to make payments easier than ever. That cab ride you can’t split because, shocker, no one has cash on them is a notion of the past. This app allows one person to make the payment and have his or her friends simply pay their share using Venmo. Receiving money via this app is ALWAYS free. The only catch, however, is this app is currently only available in the United States.

Netflix: “the world’s leading subscription service for watching TV episodes and movies on your phone.”

Netflix, man’s new best friend, is probably the most creative and innovative technological discovery of our generation. While not every television show or movie is available on Netflix, it has certainly been increasing its variety since hitting the market.

As Netflix continues to develop its original series, you can only imagine the entire selection will expand. "Orange Is The New Black," the newest season of "Arrested Development" and "House Of Cards" are just three examples of how Netflix is truly widening its power.

Seamless: “Order delivery or takeout from your favorite restaurants more quickly and easily, all within an amazingly good-looking interface. Get real-time results without switching screens when filtering by new restaurants, discounts or multiple cuisine types.”

If you don’t know what Seamless is, you haven’t lived yet. This app basically gives you a list of any and all restaurants in your city. You can create a personalized account that tracks your most consumed meals and most visited restaurants, allowing for speedy decision-making. This is perhaps the most efficient way to order food, as it eliminates any language barrier a telephone call presents.

My Days: “a new application for every woman who would like to track her Period and Ovulation. You may not only Track your Period, it's easy now to keep in Mind when you last had Sex or when you took your Pill.”

Tracking your period is something every woman should do, but many just forget to. This relatively new innovation is one that should be on every female’s mobile device or tablet. Keeping track of your cycle has never been easier.

Think only women can benefit from this app? Nope see here how men can utilize this to their advantage. Just kidding, but seriously…

Starbucks: “Pay for your purchases with your Starbucks Card. Track your Stars and redeem your My Starbucks Rewards. Reload your Starbucks Card’s balance.”

Everyone loves Starbucks, there's no denying that. This application makes paying for your order that much easier, as you don’t even need your wallet, just your cell! Load up your Starbucks card with whatever amount you wish and scan your barcode at whatever location you are currently visiting.

Uber: “The Uber application connects you to a driver with the push of a button. Request, ride, and pay via your mobile phone.”

We all know how difficult it can be when trying to grab a cab in a major city, especially in the later hours. This app grants you the luxury of a private vehicle that will pick you up promptly from whatever location you desire. One of the more beneficial aspects of this application is that it lets you split fares with your friends. Uber is available in over 40 cities and 15 different countries.

Spotify: “a digital music service that gives you access to millions of songs.”

This is perhaps one of the best music applications you could have on your tablet or mobile device. Your first month is free and I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t at least bought the $10/month subscription when his or her trial was over. Spotify offers a vast selection of music, rendering your iTunes app essentially useless. The best part of this application is that it hardly takes up storage space on your device.

Wishi: “By getting crowd-sourced styling advice, you can learn to understand the value of your closet. No more 'nothing to wear' days.”

This is social networking for your closet. You know those items you have hanging that you never thought you could pull off? Upload your closet and let others be your guide. Stop wasting money on new clothes when you have more than enough already present in your wardrobe.

Hop Stop: "HopStop provides door-to-door transit, walking, biking, taxi and hourly car rental directions in over 300 cities. Take HopStop everywhere you go."

For all us idiots who can’t figure out how to navigate a subway system (I know I’m not alone out there), then this is the app for you. Type in your current location and your intended destination and voilà! Directions before your eyes.

It can’t really be any simpler than this. The only drawback however is the fact that there is no cellular reception in many underground tunnels. You need to make sure you receive your directions before you actually embark on your journey. Tip: take screen shots so your directions don’t somehow disappear.

Groupon: “Groupon features a daily deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat and buy in 48 countries.”

This is honestly an essential for any city dweller. This app offers daily deals for the most fun things to do in a variety of different cities and countries. From meals, to vacations, to shopping -- there is virtually a deal for anything you could hope to get your hands on.
