South Yorks Police

Lucas Bigley wasn't pleased after finding out his longtime friend, Matthew Wilson, was involved in a "romantic relationship" with his mother.

In fact, the 19-year-old South Yorkshire man was so unhappy about the alleged fling he stabbed Wilson to death in a violent rage, MailOnline reports.

According to Detective Chief Inspector Craig Jackson, Bigley "once considered" Wilson, 19, his friend -- before the attack.

He allegedly said,

The court heard how both he and the victim knew each other for many years, but their friendship broke down after Matthew began a romantic relationship with Bigley's mother.

Police reportedly found Bigley covered in blood in a nearby home after fleeing the gruesome scene where he killed Wilson in the early hours on May 28.

According to The Sun, the knife Bigley used to murder his friend was discovered in the garden at the residence where he was hiding.

Commenting on the crime, Jackson allegedly stated,

There is no excuse for the level of violence he exerted on Matthew, who suffered a number of severe stab wounds any one of which would have proved fatal.

After recently appearing for trial in Hull Crown Court, Bigley was sentenced to a life in jail with a minimum of 22 years behind bars.

Wilson's family is reportedly pleased with the verdict and released a statement publicizing their feelings toward the devastating crime.

The statement reads,

We are relieved that the trial of Lucas Bigley is now over and we are satisfied with today's verdict. While we regard the sentence Bigley has been given as fair, no sentence will ever bring Matt back to us.

The family continued, claiming the loss of their son is essentially giving them a "life sentence" as well,

We too have been handed a life sentence. We would now wish our privacy to be respected as we try to come to terms with today's events.
