While it’s illegal to print an entire gun, printing the parts separately is permissible. Over 150,000 freely downloadable files for high-capacity magazines have so far been downloaded since President Obama gun control proposal was made public.
This just goes to show that criminals will always find a way to getting their hands on weapons. The Defense Distributed website reads:
“The specific purposes for which this corporation is organized are: To defend the civil liberty of popular access to arms as guaranteed by the United States Constitution and affirmed by the United States Supreme Court, through facilitating global access to, and the collaborative production of, information and knowledge related to the 3D printing of arms; and to publish and distribute, at no cost to the public, such information and knowledge in promotion of the public interest.”
It will be interesting to see Defense Distributed’s response once the first massacre from 3D-printed guns breaks the hearts of Americans for yet another time.
