Marking the 40-year anniversary of the legalization of abortion, America has now had over 50 million legal abortions since the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision dating back to January 22nd of 1973.

The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) estimates the number of legal abortions to be at 54,559,615.

This means that 3,300 abortions take place daily- or 137 abortions an hour. An abortion happens every 30 seconds in the United States.

Analysis shows that the current number of annual abortions via both surgical procedure and the drug RU 486, is somewhere around 1.2 million. One thing to smile about, though, is that abortions seem to be on the decline.

“After reaching a high of over 1.6 million in 1990, the number of abortions annually performed in the U.S. has dropped back to levels not seen since the late 1970s,” NRLC says.
