6-Year-Old Boy Suspended After Pointing Finger-Gun At School
We were, and remain a bit shook up from the events in Newtown Connecticut less than a month ago. We are all a bit sensitive and on our guard- but suspending a 6-year-old kid for pointing his index finger and cocking his thumb seems a bit ridiculous.
Chances are that the kid didn’t even know of the tragedy that happened only weeks before.
Reports state:
“A 6-year-old Montgomery County boy was recently suspended from school for making a gun gesture with his thumb and forefinger. Now, his family has retained a lawyer and is fighting back.
The boy is a student at Roscoe Nix Elementary School in Silver Spring. His attorney, Robin Ficker, says that school officials overreacted to the gesture, since it came a week after the mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in which 20 elementary school students and 6 staff members were killed.”
There is most definitely a better way to let the kid know that pretend shooting a gun is not allowed in school that doesn’t result in him taking time off from his education. But then again, I am sure the kid doesn’t mind some vacation time.
