A group of Turkish protesters found themselves in the back of a police van seven days ago, a triumphant moment they felt needed to be commemorated with a photo.
We don’t know whether these 14 people were about to be put behind bars or just taken into custody, but the group was all smiles either way.
The juxtaposition of faces resembles the legendary selfie Ellen DeGeneres took at the Oscars earlier this month, only these faces are smushed together because that’s how they were actually sitting in the cramped van.
Ellen obviously knew her photo would make waves, but did she have any idea that from now on, any selfie with at least 10 people would be known as an “Ellen selfie”?
Instanbul became the site of mass protests once again after a 15-year-old boy was killed by a teargas canister that struck his head last June, reigniting the country’s widespread animosity towards allegedly corrupt Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
