Carnival Shipwreck Survivors To Be Offered $14,400

The survivors of the Costa Concordia shipwreck will be offered $14,400, or 11,000 euros, apiece as compensation for their ordeal, CNN reported Friday.

According to the news agency, the compensation agreement was reached during a meeting between the Italian Association of Tour Operators and various consumer groups. Separate agreements will be reached with passengers who were injured and the families of those who were killed.

While passengers are not obligated to take the compensation package, if they do, they would have to waive their right to filing suit against the cruise ship operator, which is owned by Carnival Corp. CCL -0.26% .

At least 16 passengers were killed and another 16 are still missing after a Costa ocean liner ran aground off Italy’s Tuscan coast on Jan. 13.
