Horrifying footage surfaced last Wednesday showing an Indiana police officer beating his dog.

According to Opposing Views, the video was filmed by someone looking out a second story window nearby to inspect the fate of the man leaning on the police car, who we can assume was just pulled over.

The officer, from the Hammond Police Department, is seen lifting the dog into the air by his collar and whipping him with his leash.

The only possible explanation for the treatment could be that the dog wrongfully attacked the man in the red car, but this punishment is still intolerable.

The video quickly went viral, bringing it to the attention of Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.

“Anybody who loves dogs as much as I do is always saddened and shocked anytime you hear of a dog’s abuse. When you find out it happened with an employee of yours, it makes it that much more shocking and disturbing. Please know that the Hammond PD does not condone that type of behavior of any of its officers, nor is it tolerated in this administration,” McDermott said in a statement.

The officer has since been put on administrative leave and will be investigated for further instances of abuse.

The dog has also been placed under the control of another officer.
