Move over pomegranate and Açaí berries, dragon fruit is the next big superfood, as it looks to be the big craze of 2013.

The dragon fruit looks like it’s ready for a fight on the outside, with sharp, prickly bits ready to protect it from possible intruders.

Once you get beyond its rugged outside, the inside is most definitely worth the trouble.

The dragon fruit boasts tons of health-giving properties, including a slew of anti-oxidents, as well as the ability to regulate blood sugar levels in diabetics.

The fruit originates in South America, but is also now grown in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Philippines, where it’s loved for its many health benefits.

Said to be rich in vitamin C, fiber and calcium, the pitaya – or dragon fruit as it’s also known – gives much more nutrients than the very popular açaí berries.

So if you’re looking to be healthy and trendy, crack open a dragon fruit.
