A brave nine-year-old girl died after rescuing her brother from drowning in an Alabama lake. Brandi Odom was playing in a Bear Creek pond behind her grandparents’ house with her brothers Calvin and Robert, when one brother went too deep into the water and she went out after him.

Brandi pulled her brother to safety, but got trapped in the water.

Brandi’s grandmother pulled Brandi out of the water and administered CPR while Brandi’s brother dialed 911.

When the paramedics arrived, they transported Brandi to Haleyville hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

‘This is a tragedy but she gave her life to save her little brother. She is a hero,’ said Bear Creek Fire and Rescue Chief Rob Taylor.

The accident occurred at 5:30 pm, after the children disobeyed their grandmother and went out into the pond without her.

‘They were supposed to wait for their grandmother before they went in, but they didn’t,’ said Brandi’s mother Paula Odom.

Principal Ellen Andrews at Gardendale Elementary, where Brandi attended school, said that Brandi was a caring girl.

‘She was a very loving child who very much wanted to please and help,’ Andrews said to North Jefferson News.

Some children are natural-born helpers, and she was one of them. This just breaks my heart.

My teachers are upset because they’ve had Brandi or her brothers.

It’s a great loss for our student body. We comfort each other – we’re a very strong faculty. We rely on a strength that is greater than our own.

Police Chief Taylor said that Brandi’s actions were admirable.

I can speak for the firefighters and emergency responders. A lot of us have small kids and at the same time this little girl she gave her life to save her brother. You couldn’t ask for anymore for someone to give their life to save someone else.

The funeral for Brandi will be held in Gardendale, Alabama today.

Everything I’ve Wanted To Say To My Cousin Since She Overdosed 8 Years Ago

Dear Jess, It’s been eight years since you succumbed to your demons. I remember that day so vividly. “Jess is gone,” my dad told me. “Gone? She ran away?” “No. She’s GONE,” he confirmed. I’ve written about you twice — twice in eight years. They were short pieces, never offering much detail.  Most people I […]
