Insanely Fit Mom Accused Of Fat Shaming Women With Instagram Photo

by Gillian Fuller

British fitness blogger and mother Abby Pell is in hot water after posting a controversial photo to Instagram, which has some commenters accusing the super-ripped mother of fat shaming other moms.

The photo was originally posted to Instagram in February of last year, but it recently resurfaced after Pell won fourth place in a women's bodybuilding competition, World Beauty Fitness & Fashion.

The photo itself isn't particularly offensive: In it, the 33-year-old bares her six pack of abs, while her daughter, standing beside her, points to her mom's toned stomach. But it's the caption, which reads, “I have a kid, a six pack and no excuse” that has people riled up.

One commenter wrote,

This is fat shaming, pure and simple. Exploiting your motherhood to show off is despicable and shameless.

Another agreed,

This is so demeaning— I bet she doesn't have to work for a living.

Luckily, Pell is taking the controversy all in stride, though she did post a lengthy explanation on her Facebook page, claiming,

I don't want to make other women feel bad about themselves, I want them to look at me and think, if she can do it so can I.

In an interview with People magazine, she admitted,

On reflection, I can see why it caused a little controversy. I could have picked a different caption, true, but would I have reached as many people as I did?

She continues,

My extreme transformation was a good advert for an underlying message that if you have a fitness goal, whatever it might be, being a mum won't stop you from achieving it.

The photo that started it all:

Pell really works for the body she has.

And she's seriously ripped.

Her Instagram and Facebook are full of workout selfies.

This is from the fitness competition she competed in.

Casual.

In case you can't tell, the leggings read "better bodies."

Can we call this a 12 pack?

She dedicated her life to fitness after gaining pregnancy weight.

Obviously, it worked.
