iPhone 5 Hits Stores, Could Sell As Many As 8 Million This Weekend

It’s iPhone day around the world, which means eager early adopters, many of whom have been lining up outside of Apple stores for days, are finally getting their hands on the latest holy slab of glass, aluminum and silicon handed down from Cupertino.

You might think that after six iPhones, this annual ritual would begin to lose steam, but you would be wrong. This time around some analysts have noted that lines for the iPhone 5 are considerably larger than they were last year for the iPhone 4S— as much as 83 percent larger.

Piper Jaffray estimates that because of this demand, and the millions of iPhones already sold online via pre-order, that Apple may clear as many as 8 million in iPhone sales by the end of the weekend. For those keeping score at home, that would be about twice as many as it sold during the same period last year.
