A 45-year-old Mexican woman has been living in the terminal of Cancun Airport after flying in from the United States.

According to Daily Mail, the woman has been spotted eating, sleeping and bathing in the airport. Passing travelers see her just walking around the terminal, sleeping on the floor, bathing in the bathrooms and withdrawing money from ATMs to pay for food.

A police investigation found that the woman is carrying a Mexican passport under the name Marcela Silvia Montano Mancera. Though she is being closely monitored by federal officers, she has yet to commit a crime.

Airport officials have no idea why she hasn’t left the airport to go home.

The Global Post reports that the woman, who has been living at the airport since June 30, has been heard talking to herself in both Spanish and English. Authorities have reportedly tried to contact her family, but have failed to do so.

One cannot help but think of the movie “The Terminal” after hearing this story. In this film, Tom Hanks plays an immigrant who is denied entry into the U.S., but refuses to return to his home country because of a violent revolution.

Until he is granted permission to enter the U.S., Hanks’ character lives in the airport terminal.

This movie is loosely based on the life of Iranian refugee Mehran Karimi Nasseri, who lived in the departure lounge of Terminal One in Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport from August 26, 1988 until July of 2006.

Expelled from Iran in 1977 for protests against the Shah, he was given refugee status and could choose to live in any European country.

He chose England, where he got mugged and had his documents stolen. Mehran was permitted to fly to Paris, but not to enter the country. He lived in the airport terminal until he was hospitalized for an unknown condition.

He is now believed to be living in Paris.

Dubai Is Bribing Citizens As Young As Two With Gold For Losing Weight

Dubai’s interesting new incentive to make its citizens lose weight involves some potentially unorthodox bribing — with gold, that is. For every 2.2 pounds (1 kg) an individual loses over the course of two months, the “Your Child in Gold” program will give the individual one gram of gold (worth $42). Families with children between […]
