Chinese kids are strapping fireworks to sparrows so they explode in mid-air like the projectiles in Angry Birds.

According to Daily Mail, 45-year-old Huang Chu discovered the twisted game when he saw children frantically fleeing a park in China's Shaanxi province.

He soon found them to be running from a firework tied to a live sparrow.

The fuse was out, so he took a picture of the poor creature and let it go.

Chu then discovered the kids had already set off several fireworks attached to birds, the remains of which were scattered throughout the area.

Some of the birds they used had apparently been captured after being shot down in mid-air by catapults.

Chu said,

I spoke to an older boy who told me that the others had been playing Angry Birds, shooting the fireworks across the park and pretending to be playing the video game of the same name.

Angry Birds requires users to launch birds at objects that then collapse or explode.

Chu says he put the photos online to prompt Chinese officials to strengthen the country's animal protection laws.
