Lawyer In India Gang Rape Trial Says ‘Respected’ Ladies Don’t Get Raped
The lawyer of three of the men accused in the horrific gang rape of a 23-year old medical student in New Delhi has placed the blame on the victim of the assault, saying that “respected” women don’t get raped.
“Until today I have not seen a single incident or example of rape with a respected lady … Even an underworld don would not like to touch a girl with respect,” said Manohar Lal Sharma.
The lawyer made utterly horrible remarks, and went so far as to tell Bloomberg that the male companion of the victim was all for the gang rape.
This comes days after spiritual leader Asaram Bapu made a similar remark, saying the victim is as guilty as the assailant.
The brutal attack on the woman has brought attention to the nonchalant attitude India has about the topic, as only 26.4 percent of the 24,206 reported rapes in the country resulted in convictions in 2011.
The Indian government has not denounced the actions of the accused, to the dismay of many, as protestors have taken to the streets all over the world demanding justice.
The three accused rapists that Sharma represents have pleaded not guilty. Two other men have not pled yet, while a sixth man is awaiting bone-density tests to determine whether or not he will be tried in juvenile court.
