Lay’s Launches Pepsi Cola And Chicken Flavored Chips
In a seemingly odd clash of flavors, Lay’s has launched Pepsi cola and chicken flavored chips. The odd flavor combination is only available in China, where battering chicken in soda is common.
“In potato-chip form, the flavor is vaguely similar to barbecue with a sugary aftertaste. If there’s any hint of Pepsi, it’s fleeting and lacks fizz,” Ad Age described the taste.
“We thought it would be really cool to have a cola combined with chicken. It’s a very popular dish in China,” said Richard Lee, PepsiCo’s Chief Marketing Officer in China.
“Also, it would be very cool to involve one of our most-iconic soft drinks.”
Lay’s Pepsi Cola and chicken flavored chips are the first time they released an outrageous flavor in China.
The company launches a new novelty flavor in China every year, with past flavors including lemon tea, cucumber, and hot-and-sour fish soup flavored chips.
A TV ad campaign promoting the Pepsi-Cola and chicken chips, which launched in August, plays a joke on viewers.
A TV ad for the Pepsi cola and chicken flavored chips begins with a man rushing out to buy cola for his girlfriend – but instead of drinking it, she pours it into a wok and caramelizes a batch of chicken wings.
“We want to celebrate a philosophy [that says] you can find happiness all around you,” said Mr. Lee.
Would you try the bizarre chips?
