If Oscar Pistorius is convicted, he’s definitely not in for a good time, as he will be locked up in one of the most feared prisons in South Africa, according to a top criminologist.
If Pistorius is convicted of murdering his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, he will be detained in Pretoria Central Prison.
“Prison in South Africa is notoriously a very dangerous place,” said criminologist Laurie Pieters.
Pistorius would not be allowed to use his prosthetic legs in prison, and he would be confined to a wheelchair, which would make him a target.
“If any person with a disability entered, they would be targeted. I don’t know what sort of facilities they have in prison for handicapped people,” said Pieters.
Pretoria Central Prison crams 17 narrow bunk beds into communal cells measuring around 100 feet by 30 feet.
The prison is extremely overcrowded, and inmates sleep with little to no ventilation.
Pistorius would not be provided special care if convicted, and inmates would target him for his crime and his disability.
Drugs are easily attainable, and ruthless gangs run the prison population, forcing weaker members to do as they say.
One inmate pleaded to a judge to be transferred, citing that he had been raped many times and even contracted HIV.
Pistorius has an uphill battle to fight in court, and if convicted, it does not look good for him.
“Everybody knows who he is. You are going to have one lot targeting him for money and then maybe even others offering him protection for money,” said Pieters.
“He comes from privilege, so how is he going to adapt to that? He already looks broken in court.”
