The Rtanj Mountain in Serbia is said to possess electromagnetic waves that could possibly protect people from the doomsday predictions of the Mayans.

All the hotels nearby have already been booked- many of those visiting are going to attend the New Age conference that is due to run right through the apocalypse itself.

“I do not really believe that the end of the world is coming, but it is nice to be here in case something unusual happens,” said 28-year-old designer Darko from Belgrade.

Another visitor, Zaga Jovancic said she had brought some bottled water and canned food, “just in case.”

“I don’t expect ‘doomsday,’ but it will be nice to tell our children that we were here at a time when the whole world went mad,” Jovancic adds.

The conference itself seems to be attracting many believers in the mountains “powers”, but also many skeptics.

“We have already registered interesting electromagnetic activities in previous years and we hope that we can gather more evidence to prove this mountain is different from the rest of the world,” said conference participant Milovan Radisic.

Physicist Stjepan Kulenovis, on the other hand, thinks that the whole thing is just funny.

“Such assumptions are scientifically so groundless that one can only laugh at them,” he told AFP. “There are still unknown fields in the physics, but this one could be denied even by a fifth-grader.”
