14-year-old Kirill Dudko from Ukraine has recently pointed scientists in Canada towards a remarkable discovery he made while watching their remote deep-sea cameras.
What he saw was the first-known video documentation of an elephant seal slurping up a hagfish off the bottom of the sea floor from an incredible depth of 2,933 feet.
Young Dudko is a young scientist obsessed with marine biology. He spends much of his time monitoring video feeds from cameras sitting on the sea-floor.
This particular video footage was filmed off the coast of Canada in the Pacific Ocean. The Ukrainian boy wrote to Neptune Canada after not being able to identify the mammal that slurped up the hagfish.
“Suddenly, a huge creature grabbed the hagfish,” Dudko wrote. “You know, it was like a horror film! This creature wasn’t a fish, and I realized it was a mammal because of its nose and mustache.”
