An unaccompanied, well-dressed monkey decked out in a fur-lined winter coat was spotted in a Toronto-area Ikea.

The rhesus macaque, sporting a miniature shearling jacket, was first spotted in the parking lot, and later found inside the store.

Police say the well-dressed monkey escaped a crate and a vehicle in order to curiously explore the Ikea.

Canadian police said: “It’s a smart monkey,” said Canadian police.

“We saw a crowd of people and a little animal and I was like ‘oh my gosh it’s a monkey,’” said Bronwyn Page, who spotted the well-dressed monkey.

Page initially thought that the seven-month-old animal was fake, but realized it was in fact real after it showed signs of distress.

“It started darting all over the place. It was scared.

“It was very bizarre to see a real live monkey there. It was really small and just funny dressed in the coat.”

Toronto animal services eventually caught the monkey inside the store.

The monkey’s owner, who was shopping in Ikea, came forward, and now faces a $240 fine for having an illegal pet.

The rhesus macaque species is not endangered, but it is against the law to keep the animal in Ontario.

The monkey remains in the care of animal services, but is said to be in good health and recovered from the incident.

On Twitter, #Ikeamonkey was briefly trending, and there are least two parody accounts. There is also an Ikea Monkey page on Facebook.

The well-dressed monkey is the latest internet meme as well, popularized on Reddit and 9gag.
