An Argentine woman suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism after attempting to give herself a breast augmentation by injecting Vaseline.
The Huffington Post reports that 39-year-old Sonia Perez Llanzon died several weeks after a blood clot in her lungs occurred.
An article in Argentine newspaper La Capital dated March 18 says that Llanzon was taken to the hospital early February when she was having difficulty breathing.
She denied injecting herself at first, but later admitted that she had in fact used the petroleum jelly to make her breasts bigger.
Llanzon’s blood began to clot almost immediately after the Vaseline entered her blood stream, eventually reaching her lungs. She died of a pulmonary embolism on March 6, roughly a month after she was admitted to Santa Rosa hospital.
“In all my medical career, I’ve never seen a case like this. The human body has antibodies to remove bacteria and viruses, but it hasn’t got any mechanisms against this type of product,” Julio Pla Cardenas, chief of surgery at Lucio Molas Hospital in Santa Rosa told La Capital.
Llanzon was reportedly a very healthy woman before the fatal injection, HuffPost reports, having participated in several marathon runs.
