Being the founding country of Twitter, you’d think that the US would be way ahead of the rest of the world- and you’d be correct. But, oddly enough, the most active city in the world isn’t in the US. It’s in Indonesia.

According to the study conducted by Paris-based research firm Semiocast, Geolocation Analysis of Twitter Accounts and Tweets, the most actively twittering city in the world is Jakarta, Indonesia. New York, Tokyo London, and Sao Paulo make up the rest of the top 5.

Then, coming in at number 6 ahead of Paris and LA, is Bandung, Indonesia. Bandung’s population is roughly 2.4 million while Jakarta’s is approximately 10 million.

The top 5 countries in terms of the number of Twitter accounts is the US, Brazil, Japan, the UK and Indonesia. Following them is India, Mexico, Canada, Spain and the Philippines to make up the top 10.

Having over 140 million active Twitter accounts, the U.S. has 27% of all Twitter users.
