The New York Public Library is renovating its legendary landmark Fifth Avenue building by doubling its public space and fireproofing the main reading room, in a project that will cost $300 million.
The library President, Tony Marx held a press conference on Wednesday, announcing the planned renovations.
“The driver of this project is to create the single greatest circulating and research library in the most beloved building here in the crossroads of New York,” he said.
The New York Public Library main building will be “more functional” after the renovation.
Many experts have criticized the integrity of building, saying that it will be the library’s own downfall. This renovation will hopefully shut the critics up and provide a more modern and safer environment for one of the most incredible libraries in the world.
