San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith downplayed his sprained right middle finger after Sunday’s rout of the Buffalo Bills, but the injury might be a might more troublesome than he believed.
“It’s very much of a concern,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday. “We’ll see how it is. Alex, it’s well-documented how tough he is. He talks about it not being a big deal, so we’ll see.”
More will be known about Smith’s status when Wednesday’s injury report is released.
The 49ers are set to begin preparations for Sunday’s rematch of the NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants.
Smith ran two more plays after he got hurt, scrambling for gains each time. Backup Colin Kaepernick then took over, and he scored on a 16-yard run on the ensuing play, then led a 69-yard touchdown drive to conclude the 49ers’ 45-3 win over the Bills.
Smith finished 18-for-24 for 303 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 49 yards on three attempts. Kaepernick completed his only pass for 7 yards, and he had 39 yards on four carries.
